Now, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has reportedly announced a reduction in roaming tariffs.
It is learnt that BSNL has slashed domestic mobile roaming charges to as low as Re 1 per minute for incoming calls, and Rs 1.50 for outgoing calls.
According to company officials, at present, the charges for incoming calls while on roaming are Rs 1.75 per minute, while the tariff ceiling for outgoing calls is Rs 2.40 a minute. Officials said BSNL is likely to extend the new tariffs to select schemes only.
Telecom minister, A Raja, had earlier said that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is looking at the possibility of lowering domestic roaming charges, as proposed by his predecessor, Dayanidhi Maran.
The rates however, are unlikely to fall below Re 1 a minute, as there is a 65 paise per minute carriage charge and a 30 paise per minute termination fee involved, which has to be covered when a person receives an incoming call while on roaming.
Sources added that BSNL, which rakes in about Rs 8,000 crores annually through roaming tariffs, is mostly working on some high rental plans that will carry over 200 minutes of free roaming.
